The title character of Ben-Hur is based on Judah Ben-Hur (יְהוּדָה בּוּנְיוֹר), a wealthy Jewish prince who became a galley slave during the Third Servile War (73–71 BC). The film won a record eleven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director (William Wyler), Best Actor in a Leading Role (Charlton Heston), and Best Supporting Actor (Hugh Griffith). It was the third-highest-grossing film of1959. The movie tells the story of a heroic Prince Judah Ben-Hur who seeks revenge for his family's murder by an ambitious Roman, Messala. The story is set in 1881 at the outset of the reign of the Roman Empire under Emperor Titus. Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston) is a wealthy Jewish noble and prince. He lives with his mother and sister in Jerusalem under Roman rule, and like most Jews, they are subject to various taxes and humiliations. Because of his family's wealth, the Roman government sends Judah as a tribute to Rome to participate in the chariot races; he succeeds in winning the favor of the corrupt Roman Consul, Quintus Arrius (Stephen Boyd), who presents him to Rome as a hero of Rome. Judah performs well at the races, despite being hampered by an injury he sustained during one of his earlier races. Arrius is impressed with Judah's determination to win and offers to be his charioteer. Arrius then bribes Judah's rival, the Greek, Sextus, to start false rumors that Judah is actually Anti-Roman. This causes the Romans to become angry with Judah by believing he is an Anti-Roman rebel. A Jewish righteous man named Simonides (Hugh Griffith), who was a former friend of Arrius, tries to warn Judah of Arrius' plot against him in order to help him with his cause in seeking revenge against the Romans for killing his family and enslaving him in a Roman work camp when he was a boy. Judah ignores this warning, not knowing that Simonides was once a slave owner. Judah's love interest is Esther (Haya Harareet), the daughter of Arrius. Judah Ben-Hur successfully wins his chariot race and the trophy, but on the return trip to Jerusalem, his friend Briton (Finlay Currie) convinces him to stop for water. As they stop at a well, Sextus appears on horseback with troops and orders Judah to surrender his victory wreath in exchange for Esther's life. Judah loses no time in attacking Ben-Hur's enemies, killing Sextus' soldier Lucius (Vince Edwards). Then he sets fire to the oil on the surface area of the well. cfa1e77820
